Teaching from heart

01.08.2023

We can find different opinions about learning but most of the people have the vivid imagination that learning or even teaching a language is an effortless practice focused on repetition. As a matter of fact, learning is a thoughtful process that nowadays has been taken for granted, consequently mediocre language teachers are being formed replicating their "knowledge" and generating misinformation.

The quality of teaching a language is becoming a suspicious exercise starting from primary school lessons. Methodologies used in classes are in a constant change but in Colombia's English teachers we can see a clear persistent old-fashioned ideology, which are methods that doesn't fulfill the students' needs taking into account the diverse ways of learning they have, making the process of learning a language tedious or even boring.

The usage of outdated methodologies discourages students' excitement for learning new things. Classes are supposed to be an open space where we can learn interesting stuff that might catch our attention; hearing different students point of views about classes we can observe a significant failure in this key aspect from language teachers' pedagogy, when a learner loses their intrigue about what is being teached and the educator does nothing to motivate their classes engagement there is an alarming issue unattended.

We expect language students in high levels to have an accurate management of it, nonetheless we find an amount of said students making remarkable mistakes indicating poor-quality teaching work. Is noticeable in this situation how trifling is a correct language teaching process, in which we must consider diverse aspects, such as the learning styles or the level of the students. It is shameful to see that such simple mistakes are made with basic and primordial terms used throughout the career, replicating them in practicum classrooms. Even if this debatable situation is a continuous process of changing, it leaves me a huge question mark: Are future teachers reliable in passing on the knowledge?

After bumping into mix perspectives about this topic ans going through the process of creating materials for my own classroom I could reach a key point in my analysis as a former language teacher, I want to be a teacher that is very involved in her students learning process paying close attention to their needs. I'm still in the process of setting the way my teaching is going to be with a clear goal of being that inspirational teacher I always wanted to have during my learning era.
